What is the Hour of Code?

The Hour of Code™ is a global movement introducing tens of millions of kids worldwide to computer science, inspiring kids to learn more, breaking stereotypes, and leaving them feeling empowered.

Every year, The Ann Arbor Public Schools brings volunteers to our schools for an entire week  to show our students that anyone can learn to code and to open up a world of possibilities for future careers.

The 2020 Hour of Code™ at AAPS happens during Computer Science Education Week (Dec 7-11, 2020).

This year, all Hour of Code opportunities will be virtual.

How it Works:
  • During Computer Science Education Week (Dec 7-11), AAPS teachers will provide opportunties for computer science and tech employees/students to participate in speaker panels.
  • These speaker panels will allow tech employees to share their passion for their field and inspire the next generation of programmers, data anaylists and tech professionals.

Why is it so important?

AAPS is committed to equity and access for all students.
Participating in the Hour of Code is a concrete way we can achieve this important goal.

THE NUMBERS

You probably know the research. Many girls and people of color are underrepresented in the computer science field. Since computers and computer technology is all around us, that means a whole group of people is being left out of shaping our future world.

THE CHANGE

The Hour of Code is out to change this.  During the week of Hour of Code, students not only get to engage in coding activities, they get to interact with people in the field who look like them.

THE CHANCE

We hope by giving students a chance to see that anyone can code we will increase representation in computer science by women people of color.
Our Goals:
  • Demonstrate AAPS’s commitment to equity and access by ensuring every student has experience with computer science, with a special emphasis on students who are underrepresented in the field (people of color and women).
  • Provide students with career role models with diverse representation, so they can see themselves in a growing and important field.
  • Increase connection and engagement with the tech community in Ann Arbor.
  • Offer the tech community a look at the amazing things we are doing at AAPS when it comes to computer science.
  • Provide a fun and exciting event for students, teachers, schools and the larger community.
